Roosterbrood

Here's a simple recipe for roosterbrood, a popular South African bread traditionally cooked over an open fire:

Ingredients:
- 500g all-purpose flour - 10g instant yeast - 1 teaspoon sugar - 1 teaspoon salt - 300ml warm water - Cooking oil or butter for brushing

Instructions:
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. 2. Gradually add warm water while stirring with a wooden spoon or your hands until a soft dough forms. 3. Knead the dough on a clean surface for about 10-15 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. 4. Place the dough back into the bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size. 5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. 6. Divide the dough into smaller, round portions (about the size of a tennis ball). 7. Lightly grease a flat griddle or skillet with oil or butter and place it over medium heat (if cooking over an open fire, make sure the coals are not too hot). 8. Flatten each dough portion with your hands to about 1-2 centimeters thick and place them on the griddle or skillet. 9. Cook the roosterbrood for about 4-6 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. 10. While cooking, you can brush the top of each roosterbrood with oil or butter for added flavor and to prevent them from drying out. 11. Once cooked, remove the roosterbrood from the heat and let them cool slightly before serving. Roosterbrood is delicious on its own, but it's often enjoyed with butter, jam, cheese, or as a side with braai (barbecue) dishes. Enjoy!
